How it works
Download the Inkstain Trail app from inkstain.ai. Drag it to your Applications folder. Open it. A small icon appears in your menubar. That's it — you're recording. No account. No configuration. No Terminal.
Every session is witnessed. AI copy events are logged by size and source — never by content. App switching patterns are recorded: how many times you moved between an AI tool and your manuscript, how long you spent in each. Time in AI apps accumulates. None of it is your writing. All of it is signal that tells the story of how you worked.
When you're ready — at submission, at publication, or when someone makes an accusation — open the Inkstain menubar app, export your Trail, and go to inkstain.ai/trail. Upload your manuscript and Trail, add a note in your own words, and download your certificate. You choose what to share, when, and with whom.

The Inkstain desktop app watches your clipboard system-wide — it catches Claude desktop, ChatGPT, Replit, Cursor, and any AI tool in any browser, without a browser extension. One download covers everything. For authors who want richer platform attribution in Chrome, the Inkstain Trail browser extension is available separately — but it's optional, not required.
